Stockbridge Notice

There have been some issues getting through the gate at Stockbridge as there appears to be a problem with the padlock. We are investigating and hope to have it resolved shortly.

Stockbridge Reserve (members only) - 2 juv Blackcap, pair of Whitethroat feeding nestlings. Site in use was prepared by working party in the winter. Use of dead branches piled up near far gate.

Adult Whitethroats with juveniles and a young Little Owl in the trees by the cabins at Pennythorn. An adult Curlew with a juvenile was feeding on the 8th fairway.

Pennythorn/Glovershaw, Baildon
A family of at least five Whitethroats, possibly up to seven in a bramble patch.  Seven Oystercatchers feeding on the fairways and four adult Meadow Pipits seen carrying food to nests.

Bradup - an unusual late date was of a Lapwing chick with an adult. This was not a young bird but a small chick moving amongst the rush clumps.

River walk from Bingley to Saltaire - 3 Kingfishers seen along different stretches. One bird carrying a minnow & entering a bank nest site.
3 Grey Herons recorded with two birds in Myrtle Park, one an adult, the other a juvenile which was begging for food. This took the form of a continual cackling call along with raising of the crest.
Another Heron was seen to grab a bank vole plus some grasses in its beak before swallowing  the mammal & discarding the "salad".

Shibden Head, Queensbury

First juvenile Redstart of the Autumn seen. Also 2 Whitethroat, juvenile Blackcap, GS Woodpecker, 4 Sand Martin overhead. Several Chiffchaff calling but strangely not a single Willow Warbler was heard.

Stockbridge Reserve (members only) - Whitethroat carrying food, juvenile Blackcap, Sedge & Reed (2) still singing, Chiff-Chaff.

Glovershaw/Pennythorn/Sconce - 15 Meadow Pipit, some still feeding young, 4 Skylark, 5 Oystercatcher, 4 Reed Bunting, 2 Willow Warbler, 2 Whitethroat (possibly 3), juv Redstart, juv Pied Wagtail- 22 species in total. 6 species of butterfly including a Ringlet pursued by a Hawker dragonfly.

Glovershaw/Pennythorn
A post-breeding flock of 100+ Lapwings in fields inside the 'running track' and 10 Oystercatchers on the Golf Course.  Kestrels were hunting over the moorland slopes and a juvenile Wheatear was once more feeding on the 8th fairway.

later at Pennythorn an adult Hobby, in level flight, flew towards Shipley Glen.  Around the cabins, a Whitethroat with a juvenile and a Redstart was in trees by the cabins.

A juvenile Wheatear on the 7th fairway, a Red Kite flying low and 12 Swifts feeding on the moorland slopes.

Harris' Hawk once more seen in the area.

Apperley Bridge
A survey of the area showed that there were five Chiffchaffs, five Blackcaps, four Common Whitethroat, three Song Thrushes, a Nuthatch, Reed Bunting and 25 Sand Martins. Also a good range of butterflies including Painted Lady and Red Admiral.
