Local Birding in the Time of Coronavirus

Queensbury
From Dailie Fields four Common Buzzards were watched as they flew high over Thornton.  There was also another five which could be seen across the valley over Baildon Moor.

A pair of Long-tailed Tits in Walker Wood and a pair of Grey Wagtails by the weir at Hirstwood.

A flock of 200+ Fieldfare feeding in a recently fertilised field by the treatment works.

Shipley Glen
A spectacular conflict amongst three Great Spotted Woodpeckers. There was lots of chasing, harassing, drumming, shouting as three birds, two males and a female, sorted things out.

5 Chiffchaff singing, three in close proximity not social distancing at all. 4 Cormorant overhead. Herring Gulls over Marley sewage works, Pair Grey Wagtail on R.Aire. 4 Redwing with Song Thrushes and Blackbirds feeding on field edges.

Bingley - Lady Lane & Walsh Lane
A Common Buzzard, up to five Lapwing, a pair of Pied Wagtails, about six Curlew and a Lesser Black-backed Gull.  The rookery has just two nests this year.  A Chiffchaff was singing and a Raven was seen on both Walsh Lane and Lady Lane.  Other birds included Herring Gull, Meadow Pipit and Oystercatcher.

Otley Wetland Nature Reserve 
Whooper Swan - strange record of a distressed bird in the wood by sailing club lake. I think it had been driven there by aggressive local Mute Swans.  I was initially worried it may have been caught or injured, but as I slowly walked towards it, it crashed out of the wood, took off, and flew across the lake, so it was ok.

Pink-footed Goose - single bird with feral geese on and adjacent to sailing club lake; Wigeon (good number), Goldeneye (good number), Teal (3), Oystercatcher (many), Curlew (2), Redshank (4+), Herring Gull (2-3), Lesser Black-backed Gull (1), Stock Dove (c8)

Glovershaw/Baildon Golf Course

Single Raven and Common Buzzard, and a Stonechat.  Three pairs of Curlew,  20+ pairs of Lapwing, a pair of Kestrels and a pair of Little Owls.  On the Golf Course, eight Skylarks and 10 Meadow Pipits.  A Red Grouse, two Red-legged Partridge and three Pheasants.

Ian's exercise walk produced: 30 Canada Geese, two female Goosanders, six Tufted Ducks, three Moorhens, two Coots, seven Mallards, a Grey Heron, two drumming Great Spotted Woodpeckers and a singing Chiffchaff.  Other birds included: Nuthatch, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Wrens, Robins., Jackdaws and Crows.  Obviously a good place to exercise!

Hawksworth Moor - during an exercise walk, the following were seen - 3 Red Kite, Raven & Buzzard interested in carrion near old shooting range. 4 Stock Dove also seen along with a flock of 40 Golden Plovers in flight. 3 Redshank seen on Reva Hill area.

A Swallow seen flying around the farmyard, the earliest arrival in 49 years.

The fields around Golcar Farm contained 25 pairs of Lapwing, three pairs of Curlew a pair of Redshank and a few 'chunking' Snipe.  Seven Oystercatchers were feeding in the fields beyond the race track and up to 20 Skylarks were present on the Golf Course.

Hawksworth Moor - pair of Stonechat, 30 Golden Plovers wandering around in small flocks. One bird displaying in flight. Plenty of Skylark, Meadow Pipits, Curlew, Greylag Geese plus a couple of Oystercatchers. Four Snipe were flushed & a Red Kite was hunting.

10.45am - A flock of over 60 Whooper Swans were seen flying north-westwards.

Cononley Ings area -  2 male Shovelers, 180 Lapwing, 27 Oystercatchers, 3 Shelduck, 96 Curlew, 114 Wigeon, 52 Teal, 7 Mute Swan, 3 male Reed Buntings calling, 60 Redwing roosting in a tree with some birds singing. Seen from train near Crosshills - Little Egret.

Glovershaw
About 60 Lapwings were in the area, two-thirds of which were establishing their breeding sites.  Three pairs of Curlew were active and a couple of Snipe were making their "chunking" sounds.  A small flock of 11 Skylarks were feeding on the golf course.

A Green Woodpecker was "yaffling" from the trees in an open field near Walker Wood.
