M. who reported an earlier flock of 62 Linnets).  Grey Partridge could be heard in the long grass and an adult was guarding six juveniles in the 'horse-field'.  The Spotted Flycatchers, reported at Golcar and Glovershaw Farms were still present.

I spent half an hour up at Whetstone Gate this afternoon. There were a number of Wheatear on the rocks to the right of the road on the straight stretch leading to the mast;  I also saw an unusually large number of chats on the wall area to the right of the quarry; most of them were Whinchat .

Friday 23 August 2013

A brisk walk from Upwood Hall to Whetstone Gate produced  30+  Swallow gathering on power lines, similar numbers of Goldfinch on Thistles nearby, 1 Linnet, good numbers of Mipits , 60+, further up towards the quarry, 1 Reed Bunting,  1 Willow  Warbler, 3 Stonechat, (1 m adult, 2 juv), 2 Wheatear, 1 Whinchat.
Stephen  Lilley

I've just had a productive visit to Whetstone this morning. On arrival there was a Marsh Harrier quartering the moor to the west of Whetstone Gate before following the edge of Rivock Plantation and down to Bradup Allotment. It reappeared a further twice over the next couple of hours whilst I was parked by the quarry scattering the Red Grouse..
The area opposite the quarry had at least -a family party of Stonechat, 2 Whinchat,3 Reed Buntings plus several Willow Warblers in the bracken.

Please note that an unnamed observer was up there first light and saw nothing!

Glovershaw
A friend and saw a male Redstart around the bushes at Golcar Farm and at the gallops at the end of Birch Close Lane, there was another one.  Also at this point, six Wheatears were feeding and over Golcar Fields a Merlin was chased by Swallows.  In the distance, towards Hawksworth Moor, Sparrowhawk and Red Kite could be seen and a large raptor which we could not positively identifiy.  Having seen the comments from Ian Hargreaves, I now wonder if it was the Marsh Harrier.  It was a very dark bird, possibly Harrier-like in it's movements with markings which suggest a juvenile bird.

Glovershaw
A terrific morning's birding.  A family party of six Whitethroats poured onto the bracken from the hedgerow alongside the 'horse field' which is adjacent to the Glen Road.  Smaller groups of Dunnocks, Greenfinches, Reed Buntings and Meadow Pipits were about and a good number of brightly coloured juvenile Willow Warblers joined the throng.  At Birch Close, at least six Wheatears were feeding with three Whinchats and at Golcar Farm, two Spotted Flycatchers were prominent.
Paul King
Phil Matthews sent this lovely study of a Greenfinch, taken in garden.  These birds have been seriously affected by the disease  trichomonosis and numbers everywhere have seriously declined.

Friday, 16th August 2013

Today I watched an Osprey from the road bridge at Lindley Wood Reservoir from about 1335 to 1350hrs, when it gained height and was lost to sight. During the time in view it flew around as though hunting, but never actually tried to catch anything. At one point it tried to land on a washed-up tree stump on the mud, but got spooked by a Heron.
When first seen there were five Buzzards up in the air as well, though only one was close to the Osprey, but it never actually interacted with it.
