Saturday 26 December 2015

Stockbridge Reserve (members only) - never seen so much water with both islands under water, the fences also submerged and the feeder next to the willows completely out of sight.
The River Aire today looked more like the River Trent with the road at Stockbridge closed due to flooding.
The one feeder did attract 4 Reed Bunting, a pair of Bullfinches, whilst on the back water, 8 Goosanders sat out the torrent of water.
Once the water falls, we shall see what damage has taken place. A heap of branches piled to attract a possible Gropper this spring, is probably now in Castleford. There is still time to build another.

Hen Harrier
Ian also made a comment regarding the Hen Harrier which we featured in a recent blog. The bird was seen over Keighley Moor and is a female known as 'Highlander' and was tagged in 2014 shortly after hatching. She attempted to breed in Bowland this year and twice, the males she paired with went 'missing'. She has wandered around several local moors away from the breeding season since first being tagged .

Mystery bird call

Just a bit of fun for those who weren't at the last group meeting. Can you identify the species doing the wren-like "Trrrrr", it is not a Wren or a Mistle Thrush but is a common UK garden bird.
This was recorded a couple of weeks ago.

Riddlesden Garden.

It seems as though a peak of activity has been reached in my garden. The sole survivor of 8 nestling Blue Tits left the birdbox this morning. I fear the cold May has been responsible for the high number of deaths. Jackdaws that have been  breeding (squatting) in my Owl Box are making an making  a huge din , I think they are ready to leave.  Other young birds are coming to the feeders for the first time, sometimes with adults feeding them .

Shipley Glen.

Female Blackcap yesterday.

Stephen  Lilley

A great surprise was a female Wheatear which was seen around the cabins at Pennithorn. The bird kept returning to its favoured perch, which is beginning to look well-marked.
Nine male Reed Buntings were singing in the area and a pair of Kestrels were busily hunting and returning with food for two juveniles which had settled on the wall of Pennithorn Plantation.  A Garden Warbler could be heard singing from amongst the birches and  a Little Owl was enjoying the sun from its perch on the old building.
Other birds included up to five adult Snipe, three pairs of Curlew, a Redshank and an Oystercatcher.  Meadow Pipits and Skylarks were seen collecting food on the Golf Course.
