Keighley Bus Station on the 12th December

At the Bus Station in the centre of Keighley it was rush hour. There was a crystal clear sky, the temperature was below freezing and it was just going dark. There are 7-8 small trees in the Bus Station itself. There was nothing to be seen at first. Then the tweet tweet call of a Pied Wagtail which landed in one of the trees. Then one or two more. Then a gradual build up as more and more flew down to the trees from surrounding rooftops. There was a lot of flying around and jostling for position for the best branches. The noise of the calls became louder and louder. Finally I managed to count approximately 300 birds. It is a spectacular sight. No-one else seemed to notice them as they rushed to get home after work.

There were two male Stonechats on the bracken patch at the end of Birch Close Lane and a Wheatear on the Golf Course.  Four Grey Partridges were disturbed and three Red Grouse flew from the heather.  Reed Buntings were again around in good numbers.

Over the past two weeks there have been two groups of juvenile Grey Partridges showing well in the Heights Lane area of Bingley. A group of 5 being regular along Walsh Lane just after leaving Bingley between Greenhill Lane and Four Winds (the house on the bend). In addition a larger group of 10 is frequenting the fields near the top of the bridleway that runs from Heights Lane to Eldwick. This group is the one in the attached image and was taken in the early morning sunshine yesterday. Considering I only usually see a few individuals around the patch normally, these 15 young could improve the sightings frequency if they survive into next year.  Phil Matthews

Shipley Glen
A half hour in the Glen showed just how much pressure and stress breeding birds are under. A Sparrowhawk burst through the canopy and plucked a Chaffinch from its perch and a little later, a similar bird was harassing a pair of Mistle Thrushes.  Elsewhere, a Jay, obviously up to no good, was being bombarded by Blue Tits, Great Tits and a couple of Blackbirds.
